WTB: Altec 414Z Pair

Hi folks,

If anyone is contemplating of selling one excellent pair from their stash, please let me know. I am building (gasp!) another set of speakers.

Hey Abe, There is a mint pair right now with a Buy it Now on the bay... $299 though looks like they have been listed for awhile due to price I imagine but they look to be in very nice shape.

I saw that pair. My question is, that excess glue, should I be concerned if I buy the drivers? Does that mean they were left in a hot temp environment for a long period of time? Sorry for these questions, I am not "experienced" buying Altec vintage drivers and does not have the background in telling what is good and what is not like you guys.

Concerned ? Not at all. I would say that 75% of these vintage drivers have that, my 416's,604's do and they are fine.It has more to do with gravity then heat IME.That's why woofers should be rotated every 6 months or so.It's just a good habit to get into.Trying to offset the effects of gravity to prevent (Saging Cones) etc....

I would like to let you know that those speakers have been reconed at some time in their life and are not original parts. Probably Waldom parts.

When you make statements like that it's helpful to post your evidence also.

I'm curious why you think so?

The last pic shows a glimpse of a cone number which is certainly not Waldom. It's
6:30 AM and on my first coffee, having a bit of trouble recalling Altec numbers of the era, but I would almost guarantee they aren't Waldom

Me too ! I sent the seller an email and asked if he can send me a picture of the numbers on the cones.

Maybe we can get some clarification Abe.

A number of coffees later revisited the pics

Looks like 210xx which is a proper numbering for original Altec cones

Here is one that looks way worse check number and compare

Thanks OG ! On the Auctiva links it looks like the cone #'s are 21060

I think they are original cones ! But won't know for sure until a pic can be provided, if the seller sends me one I'll post it here.

Personally, I don't like it when the glue (surround treatment) melts all ove the cone. it just looks bad. these look like a sloppy recone to me. Or a sloppy build at Altec.

I have several 414's sitting around, I'll try to remember to look at the cone numbers.
